Quarter 2 Book Reviews

YAY for second quarter book reviews. I struggled with these books. By the middle of May, I lost interest in reading and by the end of May, I decided to take a book break. I’ve read 18 books this year total and I think I had book fatigue. Does that happen to anyone else? So for the month of June, I didn’t intentionally set out to read any books but one book I had on hold with Libby finally was available so I started to listen to that. I haven’t gotten very far in it but I am, dare I say it, excited to listen? I guess you could say, I am slowly making my way through “Come As You Are” by Emily Nagoski, Ph.D.

I am still surprised that I am enjoying audiobooks so much. I like to listen to them at the gym and on long walks. These books were fun to listen to and the narrators were all really good. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I love when Celebrities read their own books. I feel like it adds an extra something to it and its like having them right next to you while you listen.

On to the book:

You’ll Be the Death of Me- Karen McManus ⭐⭐⭐⭐
There is just something about how Karen McManus writes that I have to read every single one of her books and I never get tired of her stories. I love the story lines and how they keep me guessing.  This one had a bunch of twists that I didn’t see coming (and to Karen McManus’ credit, I rarely see the twists coming and i LOVE that!)

Braving the Wilderness- Brene Brown⭐⭐⭐
I am not a fan of Brene Brown to start with and after reading/listening to this book, I am still not a fan (#Sorrynotsorry) BUT I will give it to her for this book. I really enjoyed it and I found myself shaking my head in agreement multiple times listening to it. She had some good points. And I liked that she read it herself; it felt more authentic. “Give yourself permission to be completely and uniquely you.”

Dial A for Aunties- Jesse Q. Sutanto ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was such a random choice for me and I absolutely loved how wacky it was. Just when we got to a point of craziness, the Aunties came and just shocked me again. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in this series.

Things are What You What Make of Them- Adam J. Kurtz⭐⭐⭐
This was the only physical book I read. I found it by accident, looking for another book. I totally judged this book by its cover and deemed it was interesting enough to borrow. It was a quick read full of little tidbits of advice. It was written for artists but I feel like the advice can be used for anyone.

Act Like You Got Some Sense- Jamie Foxx⭐⭐⭐⭐
I will continue to say it, celebrities who write books and then narrate their own books will always be my favorites. I learned a ton about Jamie Foxx listening to this. NO idea he had daughters and I had no idea about his life in general except that hes funny and sang “Blame it on the alcohol”. This is a great listen. There were a bunch of times I actually laughed out loud. He provides some good parenting advice that can translate well into lives with no children too.

The School for Good Mothers- Jessamine Chan ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was on the waiting list at the library for so long for this book. When I got the physical book, I found it hard to find time to sit down and read it. Libby saved the day by having the audio book ready and waiting for me. I really liked the narrator and the story was wacky but so so enthralling. My favorite part of it all? It was set in Philadelphia. I am slightly confused why its considered Science Fiction because it does not take place in space per say but there are space-like elements to it.

Six books read this quarter. I was happy with the ones I found but more times than none, I found books I just couldn’t finish during this time. I put those back into the “to read” pile and we will see if the mood strikes me to get back to them.

As always you can follow me on GoodReads to see what I am reading.
